How I became a Massage Therapist

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Hello,

Today I’m going to fill you in on how I became a Massage Therapist.

In September 2000,I was teaching music and was in a car accident.  During impact, my shoulder crashed up against the side pillar of my car and injured the joint.  I was in a great deal of pain and saw a friend who was a massage therapist the following day.  He worked on my shoulder and eased a great deal of the pain.  I regularly saw a massage therapist after until my shoulder recovered.

Over the next few years, the idea of being a massage therapist was lurking in the back of my mind until in 2003 I decided to take a basic massage course to see if I liked it.  I didn’t like it.  I loved it.

At the end of the introduction course, I asked for an application to study for the Diploma of Remedial Massage.  I chose to study part-time at night, which when I enrolled would take me two years to complete.  At some stage during the course, the school decided it would be better if the part timers completed the course in three years.  So at the end of 2006 I finished the course.

At that point I had planned on working as a massage therapist part time and working my normal job during the day for a year, returning to study the following year.  What I didn’t know was that I was pregnant and the rest is history.

I love my work and my clients and I’m very glad I took the chance on a completely different career.

Ahhh, Friday again

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Hi,

Friday’s are my day off.  For today I had planned on going out for lunch and then going to a park and letting Little Miss go nuts.  Didn’t happen.  Instead she just wanted mummy cuddles and to watch “Ye Ha!”  A free half hour massage for the first person to guess correctly what she wanted to watch.

Anyway, in the mix, I did manage to get some washing done and managed to fall asleep while her movie of choice was on.  I’d also managed to forget to turn the phone off silent and just discovered three messages.  Nothing urgent and made me think about those strapped to their blackberries and the like as if they’re life support.  Hubby calls them crackberries.

I keep hearing how people have to read every email, answer every call and respond really quickly even if its not really important.  They tell me every thing’s important.  These are the same people who can’t relax, have a day off, drive their cars or, in one case I know of, give birth without phone calls/emails from work.  They tell me they have no time.

Let me help you out here.  There’s a little button on the device.  It has a circle with a line in it.  It makes the device turn off.  Magic isn’t it.  That’s right, you can do it.  This next step is important.  Leave it off for at least an hour and at night.  The world will not explode and here’s something really interesting, if you wait and not respond to every little email/message/call, it gives you a chance to look at them all in one hit.  You can then decide what needs doing straight away, find out it’s been sorted/done by someone else or not needed at all.  You can prioritise and delegate.  Your boss will learn how to put paper in the photocopier when you’re not there, your partner will find whatever they can’t find right under their nose, your friends will call you back or leave a message about whatever and the best, you won’t get the really time wasting cold calling sales people.  Sounds great doesn’t it.  If a client really wants to talk to you, they will leave a message or call you back.  Another bonus, eliminates tyre kickers and time wasters!

When you come for a massage, I insist you turn your mobile devices off.  I find the ring tones and buzzes annoying and distracting whilst I’m working and you’ll be wondering who was calling and if it was important.  You can’t relax and will get little benefit from the massage.  Besides, I like to give you my undivided attention.  That’s the least I can give you.

Give it a shot.  See what happens.

15 more sleeps to Mother’s Day

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Hi,

I know, using the word sleeps around mums is a little bit mean. I have been assured some mums do get sleep.

Still, the Mother’s Day offer is still on.

Point your partner in this direction before the price goes up!

In other news, I decided to get down on paper my business vision yesterday. All good in theory. I had a big piece of paper and a bunch of different coloured pens. I layed down on my office floor and started to write. In the time it took to change the music on the cd player, my little artist daughter decided it really needed more decoration and drew all over my plans. On the bright side. Discovered Little Miss (2.5 years) knows her colours.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Monday

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Hello.  Yes, I know using the name of the day as a title is very boring, but I’m not feeling all bright and shiny today.

I have never been any good at mornings and since I’ve been unable to consume caffeine, mornings have taken on a nastiness.  It just takes a little while for my brain to start functioning, that’s all.

This morning was no different.  I over slept.  Little Miss overslept.  This then means, we’re late.  She was still asleep when she was supposed to be arriving at day care.  Whoops.  I thanked my previous nights forethought for packing up dinners leftovers for her lunch as that was one less thing to get ready.  Eventually after an argument over which socks she was going to wear and a banana for breakfast, she got to care.  Yay.

For the rest of the day, I will be deciding what the future of Hand Print Massage will look like.  I have a big piece of paper, some scissors, a bunch of magazines and a glue stick.  I’m all set.  Might even crack out the coloured pens.  If you have any suggestions, I will consider them.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Today

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’ve just got back from a peer support group for alternative practitioners.

It was interesting because we were each able to help each other and yet not actually be in direct competition.  They other lovely ladies were able to give me some ideas and connections to help with the business side of things as well as providing a bit of accountability for my goals.

So the goals for this year?  Many and varied but workshops, cd making, more study of rituals and cultures and of course lots of massages!

Stay tuned for the results.

Plans, Plans, Plans.

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Isn’t funny how sometimes you make plans and they go to seed just as quickly as they are made?  That’s this week.

Still.  Hubby is now on holiday which will make the Christmas shopping (when it gets done) easier.  Little Miss is getting very excited.  It’s the first year she sort of understands what’s happening which is also exciting for us.

On Sunday, Little Miss went to Nanna and Pop’s to set up and decorate their Christmas tree.  She was giggling and smiling the whole time.  The after dinner, she crashed exhausted.  Just the way we like it!

In other news, today is the last day for Christmas Gift vouchers.  So I’m expecting a bit of a rush.  Also Wednesday is the last work day for me for this year.  Yay.  Then I’m taking a couple of weeks off to visit my family and friends in country Victoria.  Well that’s the current plan……

Catch you later.

Musing….

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Hello.

I’m Emma.  I’m Hand Print Massage.

Today I decided it was a day of action.  I decided it was time to actually get organised and start blogging my musings about my world, not just massage.

What you will not read on here is who my clients are or their medical conditions.  I might discuss what I’ve seen come through my clinic regularly but nothing specific.  (This is to protect my clients personal and health information and to protect me as well.)

Anyway.  Here’s some info on me.

I started Hand Print Massage in it’s first incantation in 2004 when I was still studying.  I was giving very basic relaxation massages to friends and family.  This was the case until I graduated with a diploma of remedial massage at the end of 2006.  I had just landed a job with a footy team and was about to set up in business when I discovered I was pregnant.  Oops.  That wasn’t planned.  So I had to turn down the job with the footballers and put my business on hold for a bit.  Ah well.  Then one day whilst in the shower (all the best ideas seem to come there) I realised there weren’t many massage therapists in my area who specialised in pregnancy, post natal or infant massage.  Infact whilst I was pregnant, I drove an hour for massages.  Later that same day, I decided to take a walk through the local shopping centre.  Every third woman who walked past me was pregnant or had just had a baby.  So Hand Print Massage for Mums was born.

A year later I’m still in business (YAY!!!) and I’ve met some wonderful women and babies.  Looking forward to meeting more.

Other info.  I have a little girl who is 2.  I have two dogs. I’m a PND survivor.  I’m passionate about learning cultural influences around pregnancy and motherhood.  I love chocolate and I don’t drink.

I’ll write more again soon.
